Graphic in first page header messes up paragraph formatting

Laura

Hello Newsgroup,

I have a letter that contains a graphic image that runs
down the left side of my document (for the first page
letterhead). I've placed the image in my first page
header. It is wider than my 1" left margin -- so on page
1 of the document the text wraps up to it on the left side.

Text with no indent, or first line indent, wraps fine --
it acts as if the image is the left margin.

However, if I try to use a hanging indent, left indent, or
table on page 1, MADNESS! The left indent and hanging
indent formatting is completely ignored. The table jumps
in position when I hit page two, even if it's right
aligned and not as wide as the page. If I have a table
that spans both pages, I have to split it and adjust the
size.

Does anyone have any suggestions for this? I want to
avoid inserting a section break and changing the margins,
because as people type, the section break position would
move.

I know there are others out there w/ this type of
letterhead going down the left side of their document.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks.
Laura

This is a known problem that affects most users. For some reason, I have
always been "charmed" in this regard; either my indents behave as expected
or (in Word 2002), the display (even in Print Preview) may indicate that
they're not behaving as expected, but the actual printout is correct.
Unfortunately, I don't know of any workaround.

I've had the same experience (as Laura's, not Suzanne's charmed one).
The only way out seems to be to add extra tab stops so that indents
will "fall" into the correct measurements whether they're level with
or beyond the displacing image.

IIRC, tabs don't work either, do they?

I have no problem doing this in Word 2003 if I understand it correctly.

I have a 2" by 8" graphic in my header positioned down the left side. The
left margin is set to accommodate the size of the graphic (at about 2.75").
You have to position the graphic after adjusting the margin as the graphic
will shift. Text wraps correctly because of the margin - the graphic, being
on another layer, has no relevance. Tables and hanging indents work fine.

Ah, never mind. Now that I re-read this I see you have a different dilemma
since you don't want to change the margins.
