Graphics appear "blurry" in Word X

Running Word X for Mac Service Release 1 on a TiPowerBook with OS X 10.3.8.

I have a designer who created a letterhead for my company. He said I
could simply place it as an image at full size in Word, and use it as a
template, writing text on top (picture placement on bottom, text as
overlay).

However, when I place the graphic (Insert -> Picture -> From File...)
it ends up around 72% of original size. I use the Picture formatting
toolbox to change size to 100%. Either way, it ends up blurred when
printed. When printed from Preview or Acrobat it's sharp and perfect.
The background image was provided from the designer as a PDF file, in
case that matters.

What can I do in order to have the graphic placed as a background image
so that it prints sharp and clear?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Hello Thor

I may have a solution for you. I think that the problem you describe is
part of Word and not just a problem in your system. I have a number of
Omnigraffle images that are very sharp on the screen and in print in
another word processor (Mellel), but in Word they are blurry.

But here is something that might work for you: ask your friend to give
you the image in another format (e.g., JPEG or TIFF). One of those may
display and print correctly.

Thanks Gibbor,

I did try an EPS (Illustrator) format, but that didn't help. I have
heard similar things to what you describe here, and will try various
formats until one looks good, then ask the designer to supply the files
in that format.

On the other hand, it would pobably be easier to simply find a better
word processor... ;-)

If you have a full version of acrobat (or photoshop), you can save the page
as a .jpg. As long as the acrobat file printed nice, the resulting .jpg
will be of the same resolution.
