Graphics are somehow cross references

This may be tough to explain...

Word 2000

In a document that I am trying to clean up, I have screenshots. The
shots have captions that I use to link as cross references. So in the
text I will have, 'Blah blah (see Figure 4-1).'

The problem I have with this document is some of the figures have
somehow got tied up with the cross reference link. So it will now say,
'Blah blah (<the picture is here>see Figure 4-1).' So when you hover
on the graphic, the pointer turns to a pointing finger.

How can I separate these? If I try to delete the Figure 4-1 text, it
wants to delete the entire link, graphic and all.
