graphics formats

I created a logo in Freehand on a Mac. The client (who uses PC's) wants
me to put it in a Word file and send it to them so that they can print
it out, send it out for classified ads, and use it for various other
purposes. I converted the text to paths in Freehand and saved it as an
eps file. When I insert the graphic file into a Word document on my
computer, it looks crummy on my screen but prints with no problem. But
the client's experience is that it looks bad on the screen and is no
better when printed.

I gather from other postings that EPS files are problematic in Word,
especially cross-platform, but I haven't figured out any other format
that WILL work. Someone mentioned .wmf or .emf that are PC-friendlier,
but when I went to export the file in one of those formats, they
weren't in the list of export options from Freehand. I have tried
exporting it as a PICT, inserting a pdf of the logo in the Word file,
rasterizing the logo in Photoshop and inserting the tiff in Word, among
other things, and nothing seems to work. The only thing that worked for
me (inserting the eps after having converted text to paths) doesn't
work for the client.

Any suggestions??

I've also found that .eps files are not the dependable format they were a
few versions of office ago. Your best bet is going to be using a TIFF or
JPG. You might as well use .jpg since it is going to be much smaller. It
should work fine cross platform.

If you have to, find a PC version of Word and play with it in there so you
are positive it works as expected for them. They'll appreciate your
tenacity in the end. Hang in there!

Hi teeb-

First of all, does your client have a postscript compatible printer? If
not they can't print anything but the same low-res thumbnail they're
seeing on screen.

Even so, Word is not necessarily the best vehicle for graphic output in
the first place. Have you tried linking to the file & supplying the
client with a copy of both the doc _and_ the image file (they really
don't need the doc if they have the image, although they still need a
ps-compatible device for eps output)? They're going to need the image
if they intend to get quality output from a commercial house, anyway.
