graphics not compressing

I'm having problems getting Word to compress graphics - so my file is
bloated with unnecessary data.

The Format-Picture dialog assures me that the compression is going
ahead, and that cropped parts of the image are removed. But it's not
true. I can magnify up to check the resolution and then un-crop to see
that the whole image is still intact.

What's preventing it from working?

Hello,

I use Word 2003 and when I compress/crop/edit pictures, the changes
don't take effect permanently until I have saved and closed the
document itself. The next time I re-open the document, the ability to
undo the crop to the picture is finally gone.

I hope you found your solution.

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I haven't found a solution yet. I
suspected that it might be because I use PNG files, but my installation
of Word can't do it for JPG files either.
