graphics problem in word

I have webpages that I made in Word for Windows (office xp for students and
teachers version 2002) but when I edit them and then preview them in word for
mac(office for mac for students and teachers 2004), I get weird code on the
top of the page and the graphics (jpegs and gifs) disappear (this happens
when you view the page in Safari or Firefox and in IE the whole page is now
gibberish).I've also noticed that when people send me word docs with
graphics, the graphics don't show when I open the attachments in word. How
do I fix this?

Hi "befuddled"
I've also noticed that when people send me word docs with

do I fix this?

In Word | Preferences | View, make sure Drawings is checked and Image
Placeholders is unchecked.

First of all, when a Word doc is saved as a webpage, in HTML format, any
graphics are extracted and put in a supporting folder, with links to the
folder in the HTML. So graphics will not show up unless Word has access to
that folder, and/or unless that folder is uploaded to the web along with the
page.

For the other stuff, I think more detail about exactly what you are doing is
needed.

Re the weird code--is it showing up in Word, or in Safari? Word should open
an HTML doc and make it look pretty much like a Word doc in Online Layout
View. When you say edit the pages, are you opening these in Online Layout
view and using Word's tools to change the text or formatting?

If Safari is giving you weird code when showing these pages, then there is
probably a flaw in the HTML so that Safari can't understand it. If you
already put the webpage online, post the link.

The bottom line, really, is that Word sucks for creating webpages, and you'd
be better off using something like Nvu, a free program that is easy to use
and doesn't require you to know anything about HTML, but would make it much
easier for others to help you fix problems.

I already have preferences set that way, so isn't the fix. Could it be
something else?

Those folders are right there in the website folder just like I had them
arranged in windows, so I don't see why Word can't access them just like it
used to in windows.

Yup it does suck. the problem is several people work on these pages and we
are required to do it this way. Wasn't a problem until I switched to a mac.

thanks for the help and sorry about the double posts before.

Mmmm.... Sorry, Word on the Mac is not up to speed in HTML. I would give
up trying to use it at this point. Word 2004 does not have the
full-featured XML engine that Word 2003 has.

Word 2003 on the PC will do a reasonable job. But if you have Word 2003 on
the PC, you also have FrontPage, which is designed as a web editor and it
does a much BETTER job.

Word on either platform is producing XHTML, not HTML. Marketing made the
developers call it "Save As Web Page" because they thought people couldn't
understand "complicated stuff" like XHTML.

I disagree with Marketing :) Word is outputting XHTML. It doesn't and
can't put out HTML, and it never tried to. Word is attempting to preserve
full compatibility between what you see in a web browser and how the Word
document would print if you printed it.

You can't DO that in HTML, it doesn't have enough commands. You CAN do it
in XHTML, but some browsers will struggle to display the result. Safari is
one.

On the other hand, in an Office setting, there is no reason why you should
not use Word "documents" on your web server. They are about the same size
(overall, once you add up the style sheets and graphics) they are a single
file with no dependencies, and most web browsers will find Word and load the
page into Word when offered a ".doc" link.

Hope this helps
