Graphics won't stay put

I am creating a two-column document. At the beginning of each paragraph
there is a picture. In the first column, the pictures mostly behave. In the
second column, however, I am having the following problems: (1) When I size
the picture and tell it where I want it, sometimes when I come back out to my
document, the picture has popped over to the left column (despite the fact
I've attached it to the paragraph in the right column). (2) I set a vertical
alignment of .01 below the paragraph. The picture, however, usually moves
down too far, and when I go back into the picture format area, my setting of
..01 has changed to, say, .13 or something. I can't drag it to just where I
want either--it's either too high or too low.

Sometimes the pictures seem right, but then as I continue adding pictures,
I'll go back up to check things, and some pictures have moved from the .01
setting.

Any suggestions on how I can keep the pics from dancing around?

If you're using that many images in a Word document you're in for a
considerable amount of frustration until you have a clearer explanation of
how graphics work [or *don't work] in Word. Even then it can be problematic
without a fair amount of experience based on that knowledge. Have a good
long session at the following link & the multitude of topics therein:

Have you considered using a page layout program (such as MS Publisher),
instead? You can still compose your text in Word, Insert it into a Pub file,
put it & the images where you wish *and* rely on everything to stay put with
far less grief & aggravation :)
