Graphs take so much space

I have copied some graphs from an Excel spreadsheet to a Word document. I did
it by marking the graph in Excel, CTRL + c, switch to Word, Edit, Paste
Special, Enhanced Metafile.
The resulting document when saved takes up approx 2.4MB of space for one
single page with three very simple graphs and no special colors. Saving the
grahps via Paintbrush as .JPG only requires 45kB each. As 2.4MB is quite a
lot to move around with on a slow intranet, I would like to know if there is
a Paste Special option that stores the pictures as the .JPG

Hi NSV,

In Excel (prior to 2007) select the chart, then hold the shift key and use Edit=>Copy Picture then paste the picture in Word to see
if that gives you a smaller file size.

SHIFT-Edit...well - I've never heard of that function...., but there it is
and the copying of a picture here really results in reduction of the needed
space.

Funny thing then - I tested these three ways of copy-paste'ing with a couple
of different graphs, and even though the graphs appeared very similar and
were composed of similar data, there was a huge difference (around 20x) not
only in the amount of space they required as a Word documents, but also in
the savings obtained by using the copy-picture function. Some of them did not
save any space at all.
I can understand if the pasting as an Excel object can vary in space as the
amount of necessary info varies with the nature of the graph, but as soon as
it is saved as a picture, there should be no difference. Still there is.

Anyway thanks for leading my attention to the Shift Edit - it was new to me
and I have some research to do here.
