Gray boxes

I inherited a document in Word 2000. Some of the text has gray boxes
around it which I can't remove. If I add to the text inside it, it
extends to include the new lines of text. It's not shading, a text box,
a shaded table or highlighting. I can't seem to right-click or double
click to get it selected. It extends from margin to margin regardless
of the text inside. Any ideas?
Thanks!

Try viewing the header and footer and see if you can delete it from
there. It's not some kind of watermark is it? Post back here if this
isn't helpful to you.

Somehow my reply I posted yesterday never got posted here.

Thanks for the help. It was just shading from the "Format, Borders and
Shading" box, which I hadn't checked cause I haven't used it in so
long. Doh!
