gray brackets appearing

Gray brackets are appearing around sentences, headings, and footers in my
documents. The brackets cannot be deleted or overwritten. I can't find a
pattern in the documents; some are new and some are older. The brackets do
not appear on a printed document, but they are viewable on the screen. Does
anyone know what causes this?

I am using Office Word 2003. I've installed XP Service Pack 2. I also have
Adobe Acrobat 6.0 installed.

The brackets are bookmarks. If you don't want to see them, go to Tools >
Options > View and uncheck the option for Bookmarks.
