Gray day in Word

for some reason both new and reopened documents have started coming up
as black type on a gray background. I tried changing the background
color to white, using the Format menu, and also fiddled with the
background fill on the Formatting palate, but nothing seems to help. I
assume this is something weird that occurred with my Normal style, but
it looks the same as it ever did. Can anyone suggest how to fix this?
G3 PB, OS 9.2.

oops--just discovered that the same gray background has suddenly
started happening in Now Up-To-Date too. So that suggests an OS
problem. Rebuild the desktop? Any other hints?
