Gray shading within gray brackets - not highlighting or forms?

In Word 2003, what is the meaning of light gray shading behind text, enclosed
in light gray brackets? I'm not talking about highlighting or forms or
fields. How do I remove the gray?

Thanks in advance for any help!

I suspect that it is field code. Select it and press Alt+F9 to toggle
the display to field results. To remove the shading,
Tool>Options>View>Show>Field Shading>Never

Gray shading normally indicates a field. Gray brackets indicate a bookmark.
Neither should print. Both can be disabled on the View tab of Tools |
Options.
