Gray status boxes -- saving, repagination, ""

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Processor: Intel Today I started getting gray rectangular "status boxes" any time I pasted a word. The "Edit" in the Menu would flash every time I pasted a word (Command-v). Then the "status box" would have a horizontal line fill from left to right.

This new development also has the same type of box for indicating that Word is checking for smart quotes or repaginating a 100 page document. When the show codes option is turned on, the "status box" shows up even when a short word is pasted that does extend the sentence to a new line.

Thanks in advance.

The Edit menu flashing when you cut/copy/paste is SOP in OS X. In fact,
depending on circumstances it may remain 'lit up' for several seconds. I
believe the rationale behind the design is simply to give the user visual
feedback that the respective command is being executed.

The "status boxes" you're referring to mean that the cutting/copying/pasting
process is underway. These, too, are quite normal depending on
circumstances. It often is a matter of what & from where the cutting/copying
is done... There can be more to the 'interpretation' of the material than
one might realize. However, if this is occurring all the time I believe it
could be attributable to a shortage of system resources and/or document
corruption, as well as other possible causes.

First confirm that Office (12.2.4) & OS X (10.5.8) are fully updated. Also,
restart your Mac & see if the problem persists after a fresh startup. That,
alone, may clear up the hesitation. If not you'll have to provide some
additional details in order to determine the cause/s.

Is this occurring in this one particular document or does it occur all
documents, even in new blank ones?

What is the nature of the document & how has it been constructed? Is Track
Changes being used? Is it one you've originated or did it come from another
source? If the latter, what version of Word was used to create or last edit
it? Any and all details could be pertinent.

Thanks for your reply. The status boxes appear if I copy and paste a single letter from the document. I used the Remove Office application to uninstall Office 2008, and deleted the preferences files and the Normal template. I then reloaded Office and downloaded all the updates. The MacMini is running OS10.5.8.

The status boxes do not appear when I open a .doc file that was produced using Word 2004, but do appear opening a new document or a .docx file.

The first document that I saw the status boxes was generated from a previous document I generated using Save As. The status boxes did not appear when the previous document was produced within the last ten days, but do now.

My first guess was a corrupted Normal.docx template file. Is there a listing of all the files, andtheir locations, that are produced when installing/using Office?
