greek symbols

I am a scientist who uses greek symbols very frequently. At my previous job the toolbar in microsoft word had individual greek symbols in it so that they could be inserted with one click. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to re-create this on my mac. Any ideas?

For any type of special characters in OS X you'll do best to familiarize
yourself with the OS X Character Palette. Although Word offers some via
Insert> Symbol as well as the Symbols group of the Object Palette in the
Toolbox the Character Palette is far more extensive & allows access to any
glyphs in any fonts installed on your Mac.

Investigate it in Mac Help & add it to the main Menu bar by going to the
Apple Menu> System Preferences> International - Input Menu.
