Grey highlighting from Endnote and on some forms in Word

Text in Endnote bibliographies and text in some Word forms is
highlighted grey. It is difficult to modify this text, e.g., selecting
one word selects an entire paragraph. Is there a way to reformat such
text so it acts just like normal text in a Word document?

Thanks in advance.

In addition, *if you are all done with the document*, you can unlink the
fields, which freezes them as plain text. Select and hit cmd-shift-F9. Then
the text will no longer be a field, and Endnote will be unable to unformat
it or update any citations. You can select all the notes and do this
without affecting the automatic numbering of the notes (at least in Word
2001).

You can also turn the gray shading off under Prefs, View.
