Grey screen on outlook2000 on windows 2000

the user is unable to see the folders screen -insted he gets a grey outlook screen and in order to solve the problem he must either close outlook or even worse restart the computer

Hmmm, the grey screen suggests a connectivity problem
between the Client and the Server (or PST file on the hard
drive). How's Outlook confgured? Is it connecting to an
Exchange Server? If so is the Exchange Server local, i.e.
in the same building as the user, or are they connecting
to it over the Internet? Anyway as you might gather the
first point to look at is connectivity. Check the mail box
size and stuff like that. We found for example that PST
files over 500MB are a problem, and Outlook 98 certainly
will often struggle to open them, not sure about 2K or XP
OL versions. Is there any parallel with the problem your
experiencing?

thanks-the user is using an exchange server and a pst both loacing on the domain not in the same buildin
we also suspected it to be aconnectivity proble
do u have any other suggestions?

You could try increasing the Time Out value (seconds) in
the Properties of the Exchange Server entry in the
Services, by default it's set to 30 seconds.

Other than that it's the more obvious stuff, reduces the
sizes involved by splitting the PST into two. Get the user
to archive to the PST file(s) regularly, or increase the
bandwidth for that user, or all users.
