Greyed out fields in Word

The fields in all my Word 2003 documents have suddenly decided to be always
selected. That is the title area, ToC, cross references, page nubers,
etc are all greyed out the whole time, like when you right click to
update a field and they go grey. When I convert to PDF the grey
disappears and everything looks normal, thank goodness, but it is
annoying. Any ideas how to fix?

You have blundered into a Word for Macintosh group, along with
countless others courtesy of Microsoft's web design ineptness.
(Next time you might like to start at

)
However the fix is probably the same.
Preferences (or whatever darksidespeak for "preferences" is - probably
"My Settings with added "my pony paperclip"") È View È Show È Field
Shading.
Change the setting to "never" or "when selected"

Heh! Wasn't that spoken like a true Apple Fanboi? We are insufferable
we are!

I was a maccy type once upon a time, so it must have been a subconcious
effort to gain approval from the land of Apple. The darkside Word term is
Tools>Options>View. But it is now fixed. Thanks a mill.
