Greyed out files with ~prefix in open files menu - how to get rid of

After getting a new computer I reinstalled windowsXP. When I reinstalled
Word (OfficeXP Professional) my Open Files menus always seem to show
increasing numbers of greyed out files with a "~" prefix such as "~$my file
name" or "~WRL my file name"
How do I
1 stop them coming
2 get rid of what is there

In your Open file dialog box, change "Files of type" to "All word
documents."
