Greyed out screen

When I use Ctrl +W to close the active file on screen it leaves a greyed out
screen with all the toolbar tabs as shown in an active file. To close this
latter I have to use the mouse to click on the close tab in the top right
corner. Seeing I am trying to eliminate the mouse as much as possible this
defeats the object of using or creating a custom keyboard shortcut, what
settings (if any) can be tweeked to stop this happening & take me back to the
desktop please? [Using XP Proffesional 2002 SP 2] Thank you. B Brush

Use ALT+F4 instead of CTRL+W
