grid line disappear from screen

Sometimes, after I use the page setup accessed from the print preview, the grid lines will disappear from the working file image on my screen. I am in Normal view, the lack of grid lines carries over into Page Layout and Page Break Preview views. I have not filled any cells. In page setup I have asked the gridlines to be printed. This does not happen consistently-it can occur on one worksheet page of a workbook, but not another. Thank you for any assistance.
