gridlines as background in a shape

How can I set the background or inside of a triangle as gridlines? I can't
get past the entire page showing gridliines. I am making shapes for kids to
count the squares to find area. Thanks.

Draw the triangle. When the shape exists and is selected, the Drawing Tools
ribbon is displayed. Click the down arrow on Shape Fill button (top right of the
Shape Styles group) and click Pattern in the dropdown menu. Select one of the
two grid patterns.

Unfortunately, it's difficult to adjust the position of the grid with respect to
the edges of the shape, so this probably won't be entirely satisfactory.
