Group By custom outline code in timesheet view

I have a task outline code that I have added to the published fields list and is now displayed with data on the timesheet view. The problem is that I cannot use the "Group By" for this field. I can select it in the list but the grid does not display the grouping. Am I missing something or is this not possible?? i can group using any of the default fields but not the custom fields.
