Grouping by project within Resource Pool

M

Mark Etheridge

Hello,

I have a common resource pool setup, and have multiple project managers
(each own a client / program) linking their projects to the resource pool.
When in resource usage view, I am trying to group the work effort /
resources by the projects linked into the pool.

When I am in the resource pool file (resource usage view), I try to group by
project by using the "customize by group" feature. When customizing, I
select the "Project" column underneath the Field name header. When I apply
the settings, it will only group into one project called "ResourcePool".
So, it does not seem to recognize the sharer files, or projects, that are
linked into the resource pool.

Is their another way?

Thank you!

Hi Mark,
I believe the problem you are having is coming from the
view you are using. The resource usage view is a
resource driven view showing assignments. When you
created the custom group and selected the Project field
in the group-by, it is reading the Resource Project field
for each resource, which is the pool file.
I don't know if the task usage view with the same custom
group will show what you want. It organizes the view by
project file then by task and shows the resources from
the pool assigned to the task. You still have work
information in the timescaled view.
Hope this helps. Let us know and we can try again.

Julie,
I am having a similar problem. The Timescaled view you
are referring to, Is this new in 2003? I am running 2002
and do not see this view as an option. Is there an addin
for 2002 for this view?
Thanks in Advance,
Cheryl

Hi Cheryl,
I apologize for being less than clear.
The "timescaled" portion of the view is the right hand
side (usually a yellow grid) of the task usage (or
resource usage) view which shows work for each resource
on a daily basis. You may zoom the right hand side to
show weeks, months or whatever you need. The resource
and task usage view is in 2002.
Again, sorry for not being clear. I hope this helps. If
not, let us know and we'll try again.
Regards,
Julie

Julie,
Thanks for the clarification. Seems like the breakdown
was on my part on the terminology. I have another
question. Is there a way to export the view you refered
to earlier. This is my structure and what I need to be
able to do:

I have a master project with inserted sub projects. The
master project has some of it's own tasks. I have a
resource pool tied to each project.
I need to be able to pull by resource the hours they are
working monthly on each project. Any ideas how to get
there in an easy way. I would like to be able to automate
this procedure.
Thanks in Advance,
Cheryl

Hello,

Their are no tasks (or effort) shown, when I view "task usage" within my
Common Resource Pool (ie: their are sharer files linked to it). This is
probably because their is not gantt chart as part of the common resource
pool. Am I missing something?

Hello Mark,

Sorry for the delay in replying:
If you have a resource pool that supplies resources to
sharer files:
Open the resource pool file and select option 3 "Open
resource pool read-write and all other sharer files into
a new master project....."
This will create a master project that is the listing off
all of the tasks from the sharer files.
If you view the task usage view from that newly created
master project file and I *think* this is what you are
searching for. The tasks should be organized by project
and the assignments for each task should appear.

Hope this helps. Let us know

Julie
