Grouping Drawing Lines to Photos in Word 2007

Is it possible to group drawing lines to photographs. I need to point
out some areas of a photo with lines and arrows but I can't seem to
group them together once I have overlayed the arrows. I need them
grouped so that if I move the photo the arrow will stay in the same
place.

Unfortunately, that is not possible. Pictures and drawings use different
graphics engines and cannot be grouped.

I think if you insert everything into the Drawing Canvas, you can group
everything together, and then drag the grouped object off the Drawing
Canvas to the desired position on the page.

Hi garfield-n-odie,

Are you saying that in 2007 you cannot elect to not have the drawing canvas
and then insert a picture, set text wrapping of say behind text, add a line
and group the two items as you can in 2003?

You can certainly group the objects, assuming that none of them has its
"Text Wrapping" option set to "In line with text." Just select the
objects, and then, on the Page Layout tab (of the ribbon), click Group, and
choose the Group option.

To change the text wrapping: On the Ribbon, click the Page Layout tab, and
then click the Text Wrapping button.

My experience in Word 2003 is that if I have an inline picture and add
drawing objects, I can group them (though I often have to keep changing
their wrapping to In Front of Text after grouping) and they will stay
together. Moreover, they will maintain their position relative to the
picture if the picture moves up or down as a result of adding or removing
text above it. Naturally, they don't necessarily move with the picture if I
drag it somewhere else unless I am careful to select the drawing objects
along with the picture.

I would hope that most of this would work the same way in 2007.

Thanks to everyone who responded and for the links which I found very
helpful. Seems a shame to change something that worked so well in the
past. I know it is going to cause me grief as I try to teach some of
our technophobes in the office.

In addition to working on the drawing canvas, you can save the document in
compatibility mode, and things work as they did in Word 2003. Once the
objects' groupability has been established, you can then switch back to Word
2007 format (if desired), and the groupability will be retained.

Well, I *am* using Word 2007, but I clearly don't know the handling of
graphics, yet. See the other replies for the full story. :-(
