grouping drawing objects and text with pictures

In the past circa MS Word 97/2000 I used to add pictures to the word
document. I could then edit the photo within Word and add drawing objects,
lines, arrows, and call out boxes within the photo so that when I moved the
photo all of the individual components would move with the photo as well.
Now in MS Word 2002 SP3 I can not do that. I am not even able to group the
drawing objects, text boxes to the photo. I have found I can still do it in
powerpoint... but that really isn't a long term solution (once it is in word
I lose the ability to edit it again) Is there some way of enabling the
ability for me to do what I described above?

Thanks!

I think you're getting confused by the Drawing Canvas feature in Word 2002.
Turn that off by clicking on Tools | Options | General | uncheck the
"Automatically create drawing canvas when inserting AutoShapes" box | OK.

Also, in Word 2002, pictures are inserted as "inline with text" (as in NOT
"float over text" in Word 97), while AutoShapes (text boxes, arrows, lines,
etc.) are inserted as "wrapped" (like "float over text" in Word 97). In Word
2002, you cannot group wrapped and inline objects together. So you need to
make the pictures in Word 2002 wrapped. To do this, insert a picture,
right-click on it, left-click on Format Picture | Layout, choose a text
wrapping option other than "inline with text", and click on OK. Then insert
your annotations, select all of the objects, and group them in the same way
you would have done it in Word 97.

I just tried turning off the feature you suggested. That didn't work for me.
I have a coworker who sowed me the insert frame feature. I might be able to
get this to work for me although I really like functionality from the
previous versions in regard to this feature which is no longer.

A frame is still not in the drawing layer. You *must* change the wrapping of
your graphic from In Line With Text to some other style in order to group
drawing objects with it.
