grouping in pivot tables

i can't get my pivot table to use the group function at
all.. all i keep getting is a message that tells me that
i "can't group that selection"... i have used the set by
step method that is on this website and it still does not
work... any ideas why i might be having this probem...
file is 3 fields... employee, data and amount.... all i
m trying to do is group my amount by weeks, yrs, q's....

any help would be appreciated.....

I must've looked it up on MSKB at the time, since it says (for XL2K) "a
PivotTable range containing a blank row is interpreted as an incorrect data
type, and therefore Excel does not allow you to group the data". Also after
redefining the range I had to refresh the table (Data menu).
