grouping jpegs and text boxes in ppt

Version: 2008 ppt will not let me group text boxes and multiple jpegs. i was able to group a set of text boxes but then they will not group with an image. this makes it extremely difficult to put together scientific figures. my old version of ppt allowed this, why can i not group things anymore? saw in a different forum that you can't group things that are involved in the slide layout, which i am definitely not doing. please help!

Are you sure you are not trying to group the picture with a placeholder (the
items that start with Click here to add ...)? I have no problem selecting
pictures and multiple non-placeholder text boxes and grouping them. Try
adding a text box from the Draw menu and a picture and see if you can group
them.
