Groups and Categories

I am ashamed to admit to complete befuddlement on the definitions of "Groups"
and "Categories" and the differences between them. The closest I can get is:
'"Categories" show what you can see and do on the Server'. I simply cannot
get my mind around the use of "Groups" (presuming my definition of
"Categories" is any where near correct?)

For example: I have a user with "Project Manager" permissions who couldn't
see any of our published projects on the server until I gave her "Team Lead"
permissions. This seems incongruous.

Can anyone define the two (Categories & Groups) and their basic differences
for me?

Dan:

For the most part, Groups contain the permissions for "what you can do"
while categories contain the permissions for "what you can do it to." The
intersection of these determines what a user can do to which project
objects.
