Hack the registry to get Excel 2000 to update?

I read this from a post back in June by Bob Buckland:

You can copy the CDs to the hard drive and install from there as one
option. A 'complete' installation is an installed rendering of
the apps, it isn't the original CD or a CD image. That's what needs
to be available to 'self heal' the apps.

Here's my question:
I installed Excel 2000 from the CD. Now I want to update, and
the updater is having trouble finding some files it wants, even when I
insert the CD.
How would it be if I changed the values in the registry, so
that the references to the original installation location is no longer
D=CD drive etc. etc., but instead is C-look here. And then if I
copied just the *.msi files or whatever the program wants into the
C-look here folder.
Would that work?

Awaiting your responses with baited breath, I remain, yours truly,

Hi, <*(((><,

I don't believe you can just change the values in the registry and have
everything work. The cleanest option, from my understanding, is to actually
perform an installation from your new source location and let it update all
the proper files and registry entries.

(I would probably uninstall and re-install, but you could try just running
setup from the local hard drive copy first.)
