hammock task?

I just heard for the first time "hammock task" -- what's this? I think it
might be what I'm looking for.

I'm doing a large migration project that will require 75 applications to be
enhanced and tested. I want to have a task that is 10% of the total
time/effort to enhance and test the applications -- as an overage factor --
that changes as the time/effort changes. Would this requirement be satisfied
with a hammock task? How would I set this up for 10% of the duration? and
for 10% of the work effort?

Jesse,
First of all to set up a hammock task go to our MVP website at:
http://www.mvps.org/project/faqs.htm
and look at FAQ 19 - Hammock tasks

However, from your description it doesn't sound like a hammock task is
what you want. If I understand correctly, you want an overall task that
spans the time of all the main effort tasks (i.e. enhancing and testing)
and also accrues a cost that is 10% of the total effort of those main
tasks. What you basically want is a summary line with resources.

A summary line for the main effort tasks will automatically span the
full duration. If you assign a resource at 10% to that summary line,
that resource's cost will vary as the effort (i.e. Work field) varies.

Normally I don't like to assign resources to a summary line - results
can be confusing and can be prone to "double dipping" if that same
resource is assigned to both the summary and one or more of the subtasks
under the summary. However, in your case, a resource on the summary line
should do that trick.

Hope this helps.
