Handling resources with multiple skills

Richard Smith

I am setting up generic resources to allow substitution by
creating skills and tieing these to generic resources.

Project seems to easily accommadate resources with a single
skill, the custom skill field seems to only accommadate a
single skill, but I cannot see how it deals with 1 to many
skills.

For instance I have three skills scattered amongst my
development team:

1) Manage databases
2) Create Screens
3) Tie databases to screens

Typically developers have 2 of these skills. Project tasks
require one of these skills, and I want leveling to
automatically assign a person with the required skill.

How should I set up skills and generic resources to
accommadate this? Does Project restrict resources to only
possess a single skill?

Thanks, I can't seem to allow a resource to have mulitple
skills,

Richard:

First of all, leveling does not assign resources. With that out of the way,
skill matching in Project is done on an exact match basis, so you must keep
this in mind no matter what you do.

You can use multiple Outline Codes for this purpose by simply checking the
box that indicates the code is used for resource matching, but remember, all
you'll ever get is an exact match, so if you indicate three codes for
matching all must match exactly. Instead of using multiple fields for
matching consider using one field for a primary match and filtering to
winnow down from there.
