Handwriting recognition

I don't have a tablet PC but I own a Wacom Intuos graphic tablet. I
tried to install the tablet PC extensions but handwriting recognition
still does not work. Had anyone the same idea as me and goot this
running? I'd love to be able to use my graphics tablet for handwritten
notes in OneNote and don't see why this should not be possible.

I'm not sure what you mean by "Tablet PC extensions". Is that software
which came with the Wacom tablet? If so, it won't work.

Handwriting support is more than just having pen hardware. OneNote does
not have its own handwriting recognition engine. It relies on the engine
present in the Tablet PC OS. You can use the mouse or an external
digitizer as input to OneNote on a conventional desktop or laptop, but your
"handwriting" will still be considered as a picture, and you won't be able
to convert it to text or search its contents.

I occasionally use the handwriting recognition tool that comes with
Office 2003 with my Wacom and OneNote. The tool lives in the Language
Bar, and you need to add it as an Input Method.

The resolution of the Wacom isn't as good as the native digital ink
that you get on Tablet PC's, but for jotting down the odd note, like a
phone number, it works quite well.

I see... no handwriting recognition software came either with my Wacom
nor with Office XP or OneNote... seems I have to wait till I can afford
a tablet PC. Thanks anyways!

Office XP includes handwriting recognition, but it doesn't show up as a
seperate program as such.

To check that it is installed, go to the Control Panel, and Select
"Regional and Language Options". Select the Languages tab, and click
on the Details button.

You should see "Handwriting Recognition" in the list of installed
services, otherwise you should be able to press click on the Add button
and go from there.

You'll need to change the Language Bar settings to "Show additional
icons", and you see the Handwriting functions appear on the Language
Bar.

Microsoft has some information about Handwriting and Office XP here:
