hang-up in Outlook Espress

When receiving e-mail, after receiving about 6 items from reported 24; the
computer ceases to respond.
I understand that it is possible after receiving the messages from the
server, to view a list of the e-mails before receiving them, so that the
e-mail which is causing the commuter to hang can be deleted..

Can anyone tell me how to do this.
