hangs deleting footnote

I have a doc with a footnote that mysteriously appeared. When I try to
delete it by highlighting the "1" and delete, I get the SBOD. I am using
Word 2004 11.1 and 10.3.9.

Hi Mike:

You have a corrupt document.

Create a new document, and carefully copy everything except the footnote
into it.
