Hangs when doc double clicked

An odd one for you - Word 2007 hangs whenever I try to open a docx file by
double clicking. Word opens and sits there with and egg timer. CPU isn't at
100%.
What is really odd is that if you open the file from the 'Open' dialogue
within Word, docs open fine.
Tried recreating the file association - no change.
Tried uninstalling & re-installing - no change.
Any ideas?

Terry,

Thanks for this. AV is Sophos. Will check addins when the user brings the
laptop back in ...

Thanks for this, which has helped get me on the right lines.

I also found Tim Anderson's blog:
http://www.itwriting.com/blog/140-annoying-word-2007-problem-cant-select-text.html
which, although the symptoms were different the same underlying problem was
probably to blame - Macromedia FlashPaper Add-in isn't compatible with Word
2007? Although the two have been installed on the machine with no problem for
a few months.

I followed his technique - setting all Add-ins LoadBehavior registry key to
0 and deleting the template file in the profile of the current user.

Word now opens docs OK when doc is double clicked, but crashes when it
closes. In 'Word Options', the FlashPaperWordUITemplate.2302.dot is still
active! If I try to remove it, Word crashes as soon as I click the 'OK'
button on the 'Manage Templates & Add-ins' window, and it is still there when
I restart. Disabling all Add-ins in 'Trust Center' makes no difference. Even
uninstalling Macromedia Flash 8 has made no difference!

Any further advice would be appreciated.

In fact, soon after posting the above, I had it fixed.

I noticed that I'd missed something that replies to Tim Anderson had pointed
out, which was to rename the registry key -
HKEY_LOCAL_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12\Word\Data
- this stopped the template reappearing. As I said, I'd already deleted the
template from the user profile, but perhaps deleting from the startup folder
would have fixed too (& less drasticly? Don't know what this registry key
does?!). Anyhow user has gone away happy & doesn't have to switch to Google
Apps or Open Office!

BTW do you know if Adobe are going to update their Office templates to get
them to interoperate with Office 2007? This could be a major problem cos we
need both sets of software.

Thanks again for all your help.

I'm not privileged to that information. I can only say that for the last 10
years, Adobe has been extremely bad at writing add-ins for Office products
and very slow at releasing updates.
