Hangs when shut down

I have windows xp pro OS with office 2000 pro installed.
I have all the latest service packs and hotfixes
installed. When I shut down outlook it hangs on with the
message "please wait while outlook shuts down".

What kind of mail services (Exchange? POP3? IMAP?) do you have configured
in your profile? (Tools | E-mail Accounts...).
Do you have a PDA connected and using ActiveSync or PocketMirror or such?
Do you have Journalling turned on and a document open in Word or Excel?

If you're using a Personal Folders File (PST) have you tried running the
Inbox Repair Tool (SCANPST.EXE)?
Have you attempted a Detect and Repair (Check the Help menu)?
