Happily reverted from 2008 to 2004

Processor: Intel

I've been struggling with Word 2008 since it appeared, and yesterday I finally gave up and reverted to the 2004 version. What a happy decision. Now my docs reopen exactly at the size and position I left them. Now I don't have Stuck Text Syndrome when I'm scrolling around a document. Now I can use my macros for all those useful little time-saving tricks. And that's after less than 12 hours using the program. I dare say there's plenty more. What a wonderful world we live in, where reverting feels like an upgrade. Thanks for nothing, Microsoft.

You're not Robinson Crusoe, Whitman... ;-)

By the way, no point moaning here. We've heard it all before. We're just
users of Microsoft's products; no-one here works for Microsoft. If you want
to let Microsoft know the depth of your feeling, send feedback via the Help
menu.

Meanwhile, enjoy Word 2004.

You might find something useful in some notes on the way I use Word for the
Mac, titled "Bend Word to Your Will", which are available as a free download
from the Word MVPs' website
(http://word.mvps.org/Mac/Bend/BendWordToYourWill.html). It doesn't cover
Word 2008.

[Note: "Bend Word to your will" is designed to be used electronically and
most subjects are self-contained dictionary-style entries. If you decide to
read more widely than the item I've referred to, it's important to read the
front end of the document -- especially pages 3 and 5 -- so you can select
some Word settings that will allow you to use the document effectively.]

Cheers,

Hello Clive.

Let me just check ... no, I'm definitely not Robinson Crusoe. And it's getting crowded round here.

Sorry to bore you. Perhaps you could put up a list of Things We Have Heard Before so us plebs don't clog up the works? I rather thought it might be of interest to others who were suffering.

I know you're not Microsoft. I have indeed fed back to them. I do already know about 'Bend Word To Your Will' and it's good and very helpful, for which much thanks.

Have a lovely day.

I guess e-mail is not a very good medium by which to convey subtleties, even
with the wink-smiley that I added.

My comment about not being alone was meant to be light-hearted. I do
empathize with you, since your viewpoint seems almost identical to mine.
Essentially I wanted to ensure that you knew where to send your comment.
Many people who post here think they are talking to Microsoft employees and
like to sound off, and I assumed your "Thanks for nothing, Microsoft"
indicated that -- ambiguously, as you now explain.

I see you're still a bit wound up: your references to "bore", "plebs", and
"List..." are your inferences that do not reflect where I was coming from.

But what the heck, it's only lousy software. Not worth getting upset over,
really... ;-) <==

Clive,

Definitely not getting worth upset about. And your feeling that I was 'wound up' or 'upset' were your inferences. I'm not in the least bit bothered. I've used Word since the dawn of time, and plenty of other programs, so I know what to expect. I was simply thinking it might be good for other users of the forum frustrated with the 'improvements' of Word 08 to hear how someone had taken a deep breath, said goodbye to the cost of the update, and decided to revert to 04. I couldn't be happier. That's my message. Over and out.

This is very helpful whitman - I appreciate where you're coming from with the upgrade to 2004 as I decide tonight if I want to purchase 2008 or go with 2004 since my free test trial ran out... thanks for your feedback...

Wood 2008 really is awful. I can't see what I'm typing. They fixed powerpoint and broke word. I'm starting to think it must be the compatibility mode. It probably works in docx but no journal I am writing for accepts docx files.

We could help if you were to tell us what is wrong.

"Awful" is not a diagnostic term (except when used by your Spouse).
