Hard drives & memory Sticks

Hi all
I hope someone can shed some light on this problem.
I Have a document about 50 pages long with a few .png graphics in it.
I wanted to add a few pics in .jpg format selected from about 500
pictures. So that I could carry all the pics around with the docs I
decided to replace my 128MB memory stick with an 8GB one.
Before I added any pics the file size was 709KB, after adding two
Jpegs the file size jumped to 1.01 MB.
I was working on the document loaded onto the 8gb memory stick, after
saving and closing the document I tried to reopen it but word wanted
to install a convertor before opening the document. I deleted the new
document and replaced it with the one from my hard drive and now word
wants a convertor to open this one as well. No convertor is required
to open the file from my hard drive or a 1GB memory stick I have
borrowed.
My hard drive is formatted in NTFS the 8GB stick in FAT32 and the 1 GB
stick in FAT(16).

Any Ideas any one?

Cheers. ian

First: Never work on a copy stored on a removable drive. That's a good way
to corrupt your file.

Second: Copy it to your hard drive. Save it as an HTML file. Open that HTML
file in Word. Save it as a .doc file. See if that makes the file smaller.

Hi JoAnn
Thanks for the reply.

I Have always worked on the doc on the 128MB stick without a problem
up to now, but it is no great problem to copy it back and forth to the
hard drive.
After shutting down my PC for a while copying the file back and forth
between the memory stick did seem to work OK and the file opened ok
after adding a couple of photos with the file size up to 16MB.

Is it common to have problems editing files on memory sticks? or do
you feel this is a file size issue. may be a bit of both?

thanks ian

"Back in the day" working with files that were on floppies was almost a
guaranteed way to screw up a file. There are those who feel that those days
are gone with the newer flash drives. Some of us aren't so sure about that.
