Hard return in a signature file

I am trying to create a signature file with several hard returns.
The hard returns appear correct in the sig file pasted into the message, but
when the message is received the only hard returns that "take" are the ones
preceded by a period "." They don't seem to take preceded by either a space
or a comma.

Look at the HTML source of the signature and see if there are proper line
breaks <br> or paragraphs <p></p> defined.

The lines all have the same line break code <br> at the end.
In addition, there are other lines in the sig file that also have commas or
nothing before the hard return and those *do* work.
Could it have something to do with line length?
