harddrive upgrade-office setup patch installer hangup

After upgrading from a 40g HD to a 120g HD, the following
message appears:"This patch package could not be opened.
Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a
valid Windows Installer patch package."

I checked the knowledge base and found article 295823
and it seems that there is a fix unless your system has
Microsoft Windows Installer 2.0 or later is installed.

"Important The Msicu.exe and Msicuu.exe (Windows
Installer CleanUp) utilities are not supported on systems
where Microsoft Windows Installer 2.0 or later is
installed, including Microsoft Windows XP."

I have a version later than 2.0. Please provide
suggestions to fix this!

I have exactly the same problem. the symptokms are also
addressed on KB294975 but the solution is DOA since I'm
not running Win 95/98 and installing from a network.
