Hardware Resources and their graphical representation

I am trying to load in Hardware resources but still show a graphical
representation of over allocation. We can do this by making them a work
resource, but that has caused allot of schedule disruption as far as
durations being changed even when they are fixed durations. When I make them
a material resource to avoid these disruptions, the Resource graph will not
show me an over allocation of this resource as it does when I have it as a
work resource.
Any advice on how to accomplish this would be much appreciated.

The key issue in your statement is that applying them as work resources
changes your durations unexpectedly, which indicates that you haven't quite
mastered control of the work/units/duration behavior in Project. If you want
to schedule and manage the loading of these resources, you need to apply
them as work resources. If you want to remain sane for the duration of your
project, you need to learn the fundamental behaviors.

Some strategies that can help: Reduce maximum units percentage for these
resources to a number below your human resources and apply them so that they
aren't the driving resource on a task. Use the split window view to manage
your task types and other assignment parameters. In cases where equipment is
used on tasks with multiple human resources, consider using hammock tasks to
isolate your equipment workloads from your human task durations.
