Harvard

I am writing an MSc dissertation and the last time I had to write a 'book' was 1995 so things have changed. I want to use Word 2008 for the fundamental tasks and have set it up with standard fonts, index listings, etc. However, where I have been thwarted is the lack of a Harvard citation standard. My Uni - Imperial College London, UK - is strict on its use and I am personally very surprised that this system is not available in Word.

Is there an add on I can use or any means of adapting Word's citation system to offer the Harvard system natively?

Thanks!

Lots of people are missing the Harvard format.

Word only just added the Citation Manager to Word 2007/2008, and it's
really aimed at undergraduate students, and is not all that powerful. MS
released the specs to allow third-parties to extend it, but it hasn't
happened yet. If you know XML, you can write a custom style--I'm
surprised one isn't out there yet, you might google.

However, there are also separate bibliographic management programs that
offer plug-ins to format Word documents, and they have many more options
and more control. For someone just starting on the Mac, I'd recommend
Bookends, I think, which is the only program that currently supports
Word 2008:

As a scientist, you might also investigate Papers for managing PDF
articles--I'm not sure how/whether it cooperates with bibliographic
management.

Thanks Dalya. Strange thing is I had to use Harvard back in 1995 when I did my undergrad degree.

I think we can have access to Endnote free through Uni but I will try and find an XML version for Word. If not then I'll go back to the manual system I used thirteen years ago!

Appreciate your input.

Hi Simon:

Daiya's point is that Endnote does NOT support Word 2008. If you have Word
2004 it will be fine. If not, it won't work.

Cheers
