The Microsoft Office Document Imaging feature is included in Office
2007, but it is an optionally installed feature. You can add the
feature to your existing installation from your Office 2007 CD as
follows (assuming you have Windows XP, but the steps should be similar
in Windows Vista):
1. Close all running applications. If you have any Office
application running, the MODI feature will not be installed properly.
2. Click on Start | Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs.
3. Click on "Microsoft Office 2007" and then click on "Change".
4. Check "Add or Remove Features" and click "Next".
5. On the bottom of the page check "Choose advanced customization
of applications." and click "Next".
6. Under Microsoft Office click on the + sign in front of
"Office Tools" to expand the category.
7. Click on the little black downward-pointing triangle to the
left of "Microsoft Office Document Imaging" and select "Run All from My
Computer".
8. Click on "Update" to install the MODI feature.

I installed image writer and now it is in my printer list but in 2003 I could
open TIFF and MDI files with image writer, now in 2007 there is no image
writer program to open them with even thoough it exists as a printer

Hi Jeff,

The MS Office Document Image Writer is part of MS Office Document Imaging, the program that opens the MDI files. You may want to
recheck the Office 2007 options that are installed if it's not listed in
Start=>Programs=>Microsoft Office=>Microsoft Office Tools

I am sure the instructions to retrieve MS Document image writer are correct
for some version of windows. However, it does not conform to the choices in
Vista. I tried my best to guess at the steps but the image writer did not
show up as printer choice or in add a printer.
Is it available in Vista?
Are there steps to convert or import the image created by MS xps document
writer.
General Comment: Why do I have to ask this question here? Why is this not
covered in the Vista help?

It is not a Vista question, but an Office question.

The MODI is an optional installation as G&O has stated. If you add it via
Programs->Microsoft Office->Modify, and expand the Office Tools section,
select the MODI option and install it, you should find it as an automatic
option under printers.

Hello - I have changed to an HP Laptop Vista 64-bit. I have made all 'not
available' and back again MODI, Office 2007. MODI appears as an option in
programs but seems to REFUSE to add itself to my printers. It worked when I
did this for my Dell Vista 32-bit tower. I am sure I am missing something.
Would you have any ideas? I thank-you in advance. -Dar

I don't know if Office includes a 64 bit driver for MODI, but I would
imagine it does not care since it writes to a file, not an actual printer.

This thread is really old. Perhaps you should start your own?

Hello Bob Buckland,

Wow, talk about a 'NO' answer - that article sure is...

I am assuming that there is not a printer driver available for the MS
Document Imaging Writer... Using PDF will work for pages that I share - maybe
it is a case of my having to change my ways... I did use MODI to regularly
save internet pages (it is a work / information thing) and I do not forward
these pages so I am guessing my next change is to use MS XPS Writer...

Are there any other options? I am new at the forums and still have a time of
it trying to enter search criteria.

Thank you, again, for your time. Maybe one day I'll be able to help someone
as you have helped me (I set my goals high!)... -Darlene

Hi Darlene,

I've not heard of another printer driver for MS Office Document Image
Writer/MS Office Live Meeting Writer, or a 3rd party add in that would work
along the lines of PDF save/print. :( I'm not aware of a way to have
that feature run in a 32-bit 'compatibility' mode, but one of the folks in
the Windows group might have if no one else offers info on that here.
