Hashes in text fields

I have been creating a chronology in Excel, useful because I can use various columns to code the entries and printout or export to Word different subchronologies. Anyway, my long text entries are showing up as a series of hashes which I thought I could rectify at the end by changing the row height and wrapping text. But that doesn't change things. I tried copying and pasting into Word, and exporting as a csv file, but each of these also copies/exports the hashes rather than the underlying text. How do I get my underlying text to display?

How long is the text? Is there anything in the cells immediately to the
right of the text? Is it straight text, or text generated with a formula
like =A1&"abc"
