Have I LOST my categories?

Richard

I have moved my OUTLOOK 2002 .PST database to a new computer. My contacts,
or other objects, appear fine, including their category assignments.
However, their category classfications show up in the category list
annotated as "(not in Master Category list)."

Unfortunately, the Master Category list has reverted back to a default
listing for a new installation. How do I rebuild my custom Master Category
listing from the categories shown in my contact list? The custom categories
are there, they show up for the individual contacts, they show up as
categories in the 'View\Current View\ By Category' listing, but they are not
part of the Master Category list.

Off course, this means they are not available to quickly assign to existing
or new contacts. How do I re-generate our custom Master Category list
created on our old computer? Is there a quick way to select all these
'floating' categories and add them to the Master List at one time?

If you still have the old computer, export the master category list from its registry. See http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/olcat.htm

The Master Category List is contained in the Windows Registry. Go back to
the other PC and use the Office Save My Settings wizard to save it or see

Thanks, Sue, I will try this solution - though I hate tampering with the
registry. I know this horse has probably been beat to death, but why in the
world has Microsoft not introduced a utility for regenerating this list
without meddling in the registry?

Just one other question, since you're probably a pro at this! Is there a
way to list all the discussion threads I have participated in, from all
discussion groups within a given product, on one screen. I am accessing
message threads from within Outlook Express. I know I can filter the
listing to only list threads I have posted (what about threads participated
in?), but I don't know if I can list threads I have participated in from
multiple groups on one screen. Likewise, is there any way to list just
discussion threads I have participated in, for any single/multiple group,
when accessing discussion threads from the Microsoft 'Discussion Group'
website?

Thanks for your help!

Why? Probably because it's just a setting convenient to the user, not data. And also, Microsoft already provides the Save My Settings Wizard to make it easy to migrate settings from one machine to another.

Outlook Express has no consolidation feature such as you describe. I don't have experience with other newsreaders (too lazy to try them all out).
