Have Office student and teacher 2007, want to compose in word 2003

I have office for student and teacher 2007. Shouldn't I be able to
downconvert to 2003, if I want to? Or, at least 2003 word? I know I can
save in compatibility mode but why can't I work in 2003 word, since 2007 word
is an upgrade of the earlier processing program?

No reason at all. Just reinstall Word 2003. I have both Word 2003 and Word
2007 both running here--usually at the same time. Or, install all of Office
2003 in addition to Office 2007. Since the S&T version of Office 2007 does
not have Outlook 2007, there's no reason you can't have that and Office 2003
both running at the same time. Or, remove Office 2007 and then install
Office 2003.
