In a table or just freeform? What would be the best way to signify to
OneNote that it should calculate those numbers rather than recording them
"as is"?

What would be the best way to signify to
OneNote that it should calculate those numbers rather than recording them
"as is"?

Same behavior as Excel? preface with an equals (=) sign to force a
calculation?

Perhaps in the ON context:

"=" followed by a space followed by a number means record "as is"
e.g. "= 2*3"

"=" followed immediately by a number (no space in between) means calculate
e.g. "=2*3"

That's not bad. I can see potential issues with inking there -- you'd
have to be pretty precise with your spacing.

The other thing that would happen when inking will be that the result will
not be in your handwriting, of course, so it may look funny. Still, it's
an intriguing idea for a feature.

I use ON exclusively on networked PCs (and love it) so inking's not an issue
for me :) (apologies for the selfish comment)

P.S. the natural caveat for this feature would be the ability to view and
edit the numbers being calculated at any time (as is possible in Excel).
Suggest a visual indicator such as the excellent red marker in cells in
Excel marking the existence of, and ability to edit, comments.
