Have to keep renewing links every time I open a work book

john.

I am switching to Mac and have a set of spread sheets that used to
work in Win XP with office 2003, I am now using Office 2008 fro Mac
and the spread sheets do not work correctly. Every time I open the
main workbook with links to another workbook (that is in the same
folder) It keeps indicating it cannot locate the target link and I
have to relocate the workbook to that the link can be updated.

What is different between Excel operation....this is surely not
correct.

thanks

Just go to Edit Links, and update the link to the current location.

Hi John -

I don't have an answer for you, but in poking around a little trying to come
up with one I did notice something that may be related.

When you go into the Edit> Links dialog what is the actual path shown for
the links? Does it accurately indicate where the target file is located on
the Mac?

The reason I ask is that in attempting to force the behavior you describe I
have both changed the name as well as the location of the target file. In
each instance Excel was able to locate the file & update the link with no
problem ‹ so I haven't seen the message you've been getting. However, even
though it finds the file with no problem the path for the link continues to
show the former location of the file as well as its original name. No matter
how many times I Update or Change Source based on the new name & location it
continues to display the original.

Since yours are files that came from a different OS/disk structure
altogether I'm thinking that if the same thing is happening there it could
be that the link is still storing & looking at what might be an invalid
path. If that path isn't updating it would explain why you're having to
repeatedly point to the target file.

Bob,

The Source (not target ..... my mistake) is identified correctly, I
have now saved the file in the xlsx format, and recreated the links
from scratch and I seem to be OK now. .....why ???? no idea??????
