Having some problems saving excel files

J

John

I had a Excel file that was worked on using a Office XP machine, and
know it is back on my Mac. Know everytime I save I keep on getting this
message everytime using Office 98 for Mac.

"This file was created using a later version of Microsoft Excel. If you
save this file using Microsoft excel 98, information created with
features in the later version may be lost."

I have tried the following.

1) Saving as a new file and renaming it
2) Saving as Excel 5.x, and then back to Excel 98
3) deleting the Cell comments that I created in Excel XP, and redoing
them in Excel 98

Thanks,

John

Hi John-

I appreciate your apprehension, but the real issue is whether any of
the features generally referred to have actually been used in the file.
XP is newer than Office 98 & saves in it's own format by default, so
any features used while you worked in the file on the pc that 98 can't
handle are already being ignored when opened the file on your Mac. The
file still knows it is an XP file, but 98 can't save it in that format.
Bottom line is as long as the file works as it should, you aren't going
to lose anything by saving it. The file will simply be saved in 98
format.

In the future, if you take a file back to XP and make changes that you
want to save, do this:

Save using the "Save As" command from the File menu,
Navigate to where you want to save the file,
Keep the same name or use a different name if you wish (the latter will
create a copy of the file),
BUT open the "Save As Type" list below the file name box and choose a
format compatible with 98.

I can't remember if 98 is specifically listed, but anything for Mac or
Office 97-2000 or earlier should work fine.

Also, be aware that if you have used any XP features that cannot be
preserved in the older format you'll get a prompt when you click Save
similar to the one you referred to.

Hope this helps
