Having trouble changing fonts

I run a Japanese Mac OS X and I'm having trouble when changing fonts
in word and excel. For example if I want to switch from Times to
Arial it goes to something completely different. I've done all the
necessary updates but still nothing works. Is there a way to fix this
problem? The version I'm running on is Mac Office X Japanese version.
When the OS language system settings are set in Japanese, the fonts
seem to work fine but when English is the first language in the system
settings the fonts in Word and Excel don't change properly. Any
suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You

I had this problem with several computers in a lab here in Japan, though the
OSes on all the eMacs were set to Japanese. The lab tech never did explain
to me how they fixed it. I couldn't even try, since the university does not
give the Administrator passwords to the faculty for networked lab computers.

The best I can suggest is going to Users/[youraccount]/Library/Preferences/
Microsoft and trashing the Word Settings 10 and the Word Font Substitutes
files. You might try the Word Font Substitutes file first, since this sounds
like it could be a substitution problem.

Of course, you should also run Disk Utility/Repair Disk Permissions when
ever you change OS languages. This might be the bvery first thing you want
to try. Swapping back and forth between languages could set up problems with
the way the Finder is associating files.

Hope this helps.
